In Memory of Myrel Schlaffer

Myrel Schlaffer was diagnosed with terminal bile duct cancer at the age of 61. She received care from the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Team, which strives to provide the best patient and family experience by preserving dignity and enhancing quality of life of those facing life-threatening illnesses. The program and staff achieve this by addressing the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families with an interdisciplinary team of dedicated professionals.

After Schlaffer’s passing, her daughter, Heather, worked with Northwestern Memorial to develop the Palliative Care Arts Program as a tribute to Myrel's love and appreciation for art. In this unique program, an approved art therapist is available several times a week to work one-on-one with palliative care and hospice patients and their families. These sessions help facilitate family discussions while diminishing stress and improving quality of life during this very difficult time.

Heather will forever be grateful for the care that the Palliative Care team provided to her mother and their family during her final days, and is proud to partner with Northwestern Memorial. To learn more about their experience with the Palliative Care Program, read Heather and Myrel's story or contact Heather at or 312-399-9816.

On behalf of the friends and family of Myrel Schlaffer, thank you for your generosity. We will notify the Schlaffer family of your thoughtful donation.
